Geoffrey West is the President of the Santa Fe Institute, an organisation devoted to creating a new kind of scientific research community, one emphasising multi-disciplinary collaboration in the pursuit of understanding the common themes that arise in natural, artificial, and social systems. West started his career in traditional physics however his curiosity into the biological parallels between behaviour of organic matter and socio-economics has moved his research onto a new level. With a focus on understanding the structure and dynamics of social organisations, such as cities and corporations, and the relationships between efficiency and innovation, West’s research gives a true insight into why some companies succeed where others don’t, why large corporations produce disproportionate levels of innovation versus small organisation, and how people operating in large cities produce more wealth per person that in smaller ones through ‘superlinear scaling’ – the mathematical formula which can be applied to explain economic output.
